Treasury Department

The Treasury Department is the U.S. government agency in charge of managing the country’s debt and executing fiscal policy. Alexander Hamilton served as the nation’s first Treasury Secretary, from 1789 to 1795, a time when the capital was still in Philadelphia. He committed to fully repay the debt obligations incurred by the states during the war of independence.
