Supreme Court

In the United States, we have two kinds of courts, state courts and federal courts. The United States Supreme Court is the highest court in the federal court system, and controls all of the other courts below it. It can also hear appeals from State Supreme Courts, which are the highest courts in their states. When African-Americans wanted to change the segregation laws in the South, they brought a lawsuit in the federal court system, which eventually ended up in the Supreme Court decision of Brown versus the Board of Education, which outlawed segregation all over the country.
