Privacy Statement of Knowledge@Wharton High School

Overall Privacy Statement
Knowledge@Wharton High School understands that the collection and dissemination of personally identifiable information may be of concern to users of the site. Because the website gathers certain types of information, users should fully understand the terms and conditions surrounding the capture and release of that information. The following discloses information gathering and dissemination practices for the Knowledge@Wharton High School website only.

Information Gathered
The site’s registration form requires users to provide  a user name and an e-mail address. The form also invites users to identify, on an optional basis, their high school status (such as student or teacher).  Knowledge@Wharton High School encourages users to fill in this information so that the content of the site will accurately reflect users’ dominant areas of interests.

  • Cookies
    A cookie is a small data file that certain Web sites write to the user’s hard drive when he or she visits the site. A cookie file can contain information, such as user ID,that the site uses to track pages the user has visited. Knowledge@Wharton High School uses cookies to store user names and passwords so that a registered user can enter the site without having to log on each time. Additionally, the cookies will gather and store any other information voluntarily provided by users. Knowledge@Wharton High School also uses cookies to anonymously track users’ sessions (i.e., pages visited, frequency of visit, etc.).  The user controls, via the computer’s operating system, whether cookies will be accepted and, if so, how they will be handled (for example, deleted or saved).
  • Auto-collected information (web logs). Our web server uses Google Analytics to recognize automatically the internet domain and IP address from which you accessed our web site, the date and time of your visit, and the pages you visited on our site, as well as information automatically forwarded by your browser. This information is also used by us to help us understand aggregate uses of our site, track usage trends, and improve our services. Web logs may also be used for system problem monitoring and maintenance.

Use of Information
Knowledge@Wharton High School uses the information gathered in aggregate to identify the dominant areas of interest of users and better prepare future content of the site. The goal is to constantly improve the value of the materials on the site.

Knowledge@Wharton High School does not share personally identifiable information with any other entities except as described here. Users are advised that information maintained by Knowledge@Wharton High School may be disclosed if required by law in connection with judicial or administrative proceedings or if in the sole discretion of Knowledge@Wharton High School disclosure is necessary to protect Knowledge@Wharton High School or the University of Pennsylvania’s interests. Aggregate information may be shared with the sponsors of Knowledge@Wharton High School, and/or the site’s advisory board,  in order to describe the demographics of site users.

Advisory emails
Occasionally, Knowledge@Wharton High School will send emails to advise users of changes with the site or provide information that may be otherwise helpful. Users may opt out of receiving future communications. See the Opt-Out section below.

  • Newsletter Subscription
    Knowledge@Wharton High School also offers a free electronic newsletter to users. At the time of registration, the site gathers the user’s e-mail address and automatically distributes the newsletter via e-mail to that user every two weeks. Users may opt out of receiving the newsletter at any time. Refer to the Opt-Out section below.
  • Knowledge@Wharton High School’s “Send to a Friend” Service
    Users can choose to electronically forward an article, abstract or research piece to someone else. Users must provide their e-mail address as well as that of the recipient. The information is used only in the case of transmission errors and to let the recipient know who sent the story. The information is not used for any other purpose.

Opt-Out Policy
This site allows users to control communications with Knowledge@Wharton High School in the following ways: (1) With the exception of e-mail and user name, opting not to provide certain information when registering for the site. (2) To unsubscribe from the Knowledge@Wharton High School newsletter, users must send an e-mail request to Knowledge@Wharton High School.upenn.edu. (3) To stop receiving updates on Knowledge@Wharton High School, users must send an e-mail request to Knowledge@Wharton High School.upenn.edu. Users are further informed of the options described in (2) and (3) above in each of the referenced newsletters and emails that they receive from Knowledge@Wharton High School.

If users decide to follow those other links, Knowledge@Wharton High School is  not  responsible for the privacy policies and content of those sites. Children under 13

This website is intended for use by people aged 13 or older.  If you are under 13, please do not send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address.  In the event that we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible.  If you believe that we might have any information from or about a child under 13, please contact us.

Deletion/Deactivate Policy
Knowledge@Wharton High School does not currently offer users the ability to completely delete personal information established at the time of registration, except as stated in the preceding section regarding children under 13.

Changes to Statement

We reserve the right to modify this privacy statement at any time and will post the changes on this site.
