The Knowledge@Wharton High School (KWHS) Investment Competition is a free, global, online investment simulation for current high school students (9th to 12th grade) and teachers. Students learn about teamwork, communication, risk, diversification, company analysis, industry analysis and investing. Teams must have four to nine students, and classes can have several competing teams; student-led investment clubs and home-schooled teams are also welcome to participate. Each competing team is responsible for managing a portfolio of $100,000 in virtual cash using Wharton’s OTIS online trading system, an Online Trading and Investment Simulator. Winners are selected on the strength and articulation of their strategies, not on the growth of their portfolios, which is a key differentiator between this investment challenge and others.
Students are required to complete two deliverables: A brief mid-project team review and a more comprehensive final policy. The mid-project team review shows the judges that each team is developing a strategy and is following it. The final policy details each team’s recommended investment strategy. KWHS judges review both documents and select a group of top teams. Teams that fail to submit either one of the two documents will no longer be considered part of the official competition. Selected top teams will present their strategies to a panel of expert judges, who will then select the top analyst teams. Good luck!

Step 1: Create a KWHS account
Register all participating members (advisors, team leaders and team members) to join Knowledge@Wharton High School. Teams will not be able to proceed with competition registration until they are registered users of KWHS. Registrations are free and members gain full access to KWHS articles and lesson plans.
Step 2: Advisors register first
Log in to the advisor’s KWHS account. Click here to register. Advisors must register for the competition first, so they are linked to their teams and can view their portfolios.
Step 3: Student team leader registers his/her team and links to advisors (if any)
Log in to the team leader’s KWHS account first. Click here to register your team for the competition. Trading accounts are tied to the KWHS accounts. Team leaders should make sure they log in to their own KWHS accounts before registering for the competition.
*Important Note: An advisor should NOT enter registration information on behalf of his/her student teams under the advisor’s KWHS account . Doing so will cause an error come trading time. After student team leaders register, they will receive a welcome letter via email. Upon registering, team leaders will have sole access to OTIS. Only the team leader is allowed to input trades; however, advisors are able to view all of their teams’ portfolios through OTIS.
